Over the last couple of years I have noticed a trend that people interested in doing a DIY conservatory ask for thermal retention properties to be increased in the roof glazing but omit to do the same with the wall frame glazing. An untreated double glazed unit has a U-value of about 2.8. This is not very efficient at retaining heat in your conservatory. By adding treatments like Pilkington K or Low-E will improve the U-value to about 1.7, which is building regulation standard for new double glazed windows. In the average conservatory will cost less than £200 which would be saved in a relatively short time on heating bills. The top of the range in heat retension is achieved by a product called Celsius Elite and this achieves a U-value of 0.9.
