Over the last couple of years I have noticed a trend that people interested in doing a DIY conservatory ask for thermal retention properties to be increased in the roof glazing but omit to do the same with the wall frame glazing. An untreated double glazed unit has a U-value of about 2.8. This is not very efficient at retaining heat in your conservatory. By adding treatments like Pilkington K or Low-E will improve the U-value to about 1.7, which is building regulation standard for new double glazed windows. In the average conservatory will cost less than £200 which would be saved in a relatively short time on heating bills. The top of the range in heat retension is achieved by a product called Celsius Elite and this achieves a U-value of 0.9.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why DIY?

The bottom line is about saving money. On average you save about 60% of the cost of having a national installation company install your conservatory.

Whats the difference between a DIY system and a trade system?

The K2 Konnect system was designed for the home owner who has no fitting experience. The panels arrive fully glazed and connect with an aluminium plate. The trade system has to be screwed together and the glazing must be installed on site. Hence installation companies employ experienced fitters to install the trade system.

Can I build a DIY conservatory on my own?

If the conservatory is simple and fairly small you should be able to complete the installation on your own. If you are installing a more complicated structure like a P-shape you will definitely need an extra pair of hands for the roof. Similarly, if you want to install glass into the roof structure another pair of hands will be required.

What materials will I need to buy?

If you purchase the K2 Konnect, DIY Conservatory system you will not need to buy anything. All fixings, sealants, rainwater goods, etc. are supplied, the only thing you may want to upgrade is the flashing system. A bituminous product called Flashband is supplied but we advise the use of lead as it is a more permanent finish.

What is U-value?

The U-value is the ability of the conservatory glazing to retain heat within the structure. An untreated double glazed sealed unit has a U-value of 2.6. When adding a low-emission treatment the U-value improves to 1.7 and when the top of the range Celsius Elite system is used the U-value further improves to 0.9.

What is the best roof glazing material?

This question will be mainly driven by your budget. As standard DIY conservatories are supplied with 25mm, five wall polycarbonate. This is the most common conservatory roof glazing material in the UK. You can upgrade this system, at very little cost, to a 35mm, seven wall system that has improved U-value and heat reflection properties. The next step up is untreated toughened glass which is better looking and reduces noise dramatically. This should not break the bank but does not have good heat reflection or U-value properties. The top of the range is Celsius Elite and depending on the size of the roof can set you back many hundreds or even thousands of pounds

What is a Durabase?

The Durabase is an insulated steel base DIY system that is used instead of the traditional concrete and brick structure. The base and wall finish is almost identical to that of the traditional method without having to have brick laying skills and in a fraction of the time without creating much mess or disruption.

When architects design extension or new homes the first thing they consider is how the internal layout of the room or building is going to work. For example a sitting/dining room needs to accommodate a lounge suite and dining room table and chairs. The table is 900mm wide and you need another meter on either side of the table to allow you to pull out the chair and sit down without having to squeeze in, hence the internal dimension will be 2900mm and when transferred to a conservatory the overall external brick dimension will be 3400mm, and that is a minimum. So when planning you conservatory size make sure you have considered what furniture you will be using and plan the size around that factor first.

DIY Conservatory Accessories and Options

Below are a number of items and optional extras that ca be added to your Self Build Conservatory Project. Guide prices are included to help you estimate and plan your budget.

Roof Ventilators.

Roof vents have become an important addition to any south facing DIY Conservatory. With the latest in Low-Emission technology, the conservatory when left locked up during a sunny day can reach quite extreme temperatures. As the heat build up starts in the roof, a cracked open roof vent allows the heat to escape without allowing the rain in. If the conservatory is hot, the best way to expel the heat is to open the roof vent fully and open a large window or door, thereby creating a chimney effect to draw the heat out. Manual roof vents are supplied with a winding pole and work in the same manner as a car jack by cranking the vent open. The upgrade from the manual roof vent is by adding an electrical motor that has a chain drive that is operated by a wall mounted rocker switch.

Manual Roof Vent (all colours, including winding pole) – £188.00

Electrical Roof Vent (all colours, including chain drive motor) – £341.00

________________________________________________________________

Tie Bars

The tie bar is an essential structural component for any DIY Conservatory of over a certain width and/or projection. The calculation for the requirement of a tie bar will differ through different regions of the UK when taking predicted snow loading estimates into account. The function of the tie bar is to stop the frames from spreading under the weight of the roof. This is especially important when dealing with a heavy glass roof.

The standard white or brown tie bars are included in the price. The above, new ‘tie wire’ concept is £150.00.

________________________________________________________________

Handles and Security

Choosing the finish color of you DIY Conservatories handles is a very personal decision. Traditionally ‘gold’ has been the most popular choice but today chrome is the handle of choice is it gives a modern aspect to the building. The gold and chrome handles are more of an architectural feature on either the white or wood grain PVC finishes, while the white handle is unobtrusive and just blends into the background on a white unit. The window handles are key lockable and have a fully secure night vent locking position to allow for background ventilation. All windows are supplied top hung with stainless steel reflex hinges that can be adjusted to become stiff so the wind cant blow them open/shut. The windows have six locking points. Two shoot bolts, two cam sliders and two frame hooks on the hinge side. The door security system is two hook bolts, four shoot bolts, two cam sliders and one dead bolt.

White handles are included on white PVC as are gold and chrome on wood grain PVC.

Window handles, gold/chrome on white PVC – £8.00 each and doors £13.00 each.

________________________________________________________________

Roof Glazing

Polycarbonate is by far the most popular choice for DIY Conservatory builders in the UK. This is mainly down to it’s low cost and ease of installation. The standard polycarbonate supplied with a self build conservatory is 25 mm, five wall structure in clear, opal and bronze. There is a heat-guard option available that will reduce solar heat gain by 50% and a bronze on opal option that will complement a wood grain finish and reflect light on the inside. The upgrade to the standard 25mm system is the seven wall, 35mm structure. This has improved heat retention properties due to the additional cavities the heat must pass through. The 35mm system is supplied in all the same colors as the standard system. It is slightly more expensive but we can only quote once we know the style and size of your DIY Conservatory.

These images demonstrate the difference between an untreated glass roof on the left and a roof treated with blue tint on the right. In direct sunlight the conservatory with the untreated roof will have almost no protection heat and glare while the treated roof will reduce the solar heat gain and glare by about 70%. For details see the Celsius Glass page in the products drop down menu. Prices can only be calculated once the size is known. Online quote

The bi-fold door system has become hugely popular with DIY conservatory builders. Where previously these doors could only be fitted by qualified professional, the new systems can be installed by competent DIY home owners. There are many different configurations of which way doors should slide and how to split the sections. At K2 Conservatories all bi-fold door systems are supplied with a portal frame so there is no downward deflection which would hinder the operation of the sliding mechanism. The portal frame consists of a structurally enhanced eaves beam and corner posts with engineered connectors and adapters to assemble the structural parts.

A three section bi-fold door, with dwarf walls on either side, including the Portal frame will be an additional £1949.00

A four section bi-fold door, with dwarf walls on either side, including the Portal frame will be an additional £2496.00

These prices are in addition to the cost of the conservatory

The below images give you some examples of how the portal frame needs to be configured to give the correct support to the b-fold door system. The small black pads indicate where the structural load will be taken up.
